make time to learn new things.

by ed mendlowitz question: i am just starting out in my own practice and started following your accounting today web blogs and your 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 blogs. i even bought some of your books.

more: how to run a practice in 90 pages | the wrong way to look for staff | strategic planning for the small firm | before you sell your practice | work the client needs … but won’t pay for you seem to know everything. how is that possible and how can i grow to become more knowledgeable like you? first off, i have been around 50 years, so i had time and good fortune on my side. second, i always had a desire to learn new things coupled with a trait that seems to not like to do repetitive things. marry these two and it led me to seek new areas and services to get involved with.

looking back (although i am still looking forward toward doing new things) i’ve had 50 years to learn new things. if i devoted each five-year period to developing a new specialty, that would have given me 10 additional specialties.

this sounds simple, but when i look at colleagues who have been around quite a while, i don’t see this in most of them. some just coasted and are generally not as successful as they could have been. some are true experts in what they do. others are good leaders who built and run successful accounting businesses. and some have small but very successful practices with clients who adore them and they are great advisors to their clients in their business and very private personal matters.

i chose an added path – i liked getting involved technically in new matters. i also developed the ability to write and talk about my experiences and a strong desire to share what i know with my fellow practitioners. i’ve had a long run to packed audiences and had a ball.

if you want to mimic some of what i did, pick a new specialty, an industry, a type of client, a service many of your clients need and are not getting from anyone and give yourself five years to develop it, acquire facility in it and establish yourself as an expert by sharing what you learned by writing or speaking (or both) on that topic. at that time, start training someone in your firm to take over from you and then pick another area to get involved in.

it is not hard – just work on one thing at a time. now is an excellent time to start because it is the first day of the next five years of your life.
