<\/a>… in the tax season that never ends. by beth bellor<\/em><\/p>\n bleak but slightly less so.<\/p>\n more:<\/b> tax pro e-filings down 20 percent<\/a> | irs web traffic doubles over year-ago<\/a> | covid drowns irs in new filings<\/a> | 2020 tax season comes to a screeching halt<\/a> | the tax season 2020 dumpster fire<\/a> | tax pros fall behind 6.2% in returns filed<\/a> | tax pros trail by 908,000 returns<\/a> that’s probably the best way to categorize the trends in the most recent data from the internal revenue service.<\/p>\n the irs had received 135.2 million individual income tax returns as of june 5, the latest statistics available. that figure was down 5.9 percent from the same week in 2019.<\/p>\n still, the agency noted that the total included returns filed to obtain economic impact payments by people who ordinarily would not usually file income tax returns. in other words, the figures could have been worse.<\/p>\n the irs had processed 122.9 million of returns, down 12.7 percent.<\/p>\n the agency had processed 90.1 percent of returns received.<\/p>\n e-filings<\/strong><\/p>\n electronic filings totaled 122.4 million, down 5.4 percent. tax professionals handled 62.1 million of those, down 14.8 percent, and self-preparers filed 60.3 million, up 6.8 percent.<\/p>\n pros kept their edge in e-filings, with 50.7 percent of the total.<\/p>\n website visits<\/strong><\/p>\n visits to irs.gov at 1.25 billion (with a b) were up 159.1 percent.<\/p>\n refunds<\/strong><\/p>\n refunds to date numbered 91.4 million, down 12.2 percent, in the total amount of $253 billion, down 11 percent. the average refund of $2,769 was up 1.3 percent.<\/p>\n direct deposit refunds numbered 76.1 million, down 13.9 percent, in the total amount of $221.3 billion. the average direct deposit refund of $2,908 was up 1.1 percent.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" … in the tax season that never ends.<\/strong>
