medications came with lists of serious side effects and often conflicted with each other. but from what suchoff read \u2013 and she read a lot \u2013 cannabis could do a world of good without threatening harm.

sandy suchoff doesn\u2019t do<\/strong> accountancy. she is<\/strong> accountancy, and cannabis is her niche.<\/p>\n

the juncture of accounting and cannabis<\/strong><\/p>\n

she\u2019s also an advocate for cannabis. she travels around the country to speak about the juncture of accounting and the cannabis industry. her firm, lefstein-suchoff cpa & associates, llc, has offices in several states, but they are mostly administrative outposts. with the use of an online portal and quickbooks desktop in the cloud, she can sit in her new jersey office while taking care of clients across the nation. her far-flung satellite offices are pieds-\u00e0-terre where she can meet with clients or stay in touch with the rest of her network while she\u2019s advocating in the area.<\/p>\n

her advocacy isn\u2019t for the use of cannabis per se but for its legitimization as a natural medicine or herb. her firm isn\u2019t dedicated exclusively to the cannabis industry, but that\u2019s where most of its clients are.<\/p>\n

it\u2019s also where the money is.<\/p>\n

different from anything else<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201ccannabis is a bit more lucrative because of the expertise that\u2019s involved,\u201d she said. \u201ci personally have researched the internal revenue code for applicable tax law. i\u2019ve researched court cases that set precedence in the cannabis industry. i teach about these things to both licensees and prospective licensees at cannabis expos nationwide. it requires a unique set of knowledge and experience. it is very different from anything else because of the tax code 280e.\u201d<\/p>\n

one of the biggest challenges for the industry, she said, is the dearth of banking services. cannabis businesses often have to deal exclusively in cash and deal with all the risks that come with it. the accounting has to be meticulous.<\/p>\n

\u201cwe have to account for every individual receipt,\u201d she said. \u201cit\u2019s certainly tedious, and you have to be very careful because the statistical likelihood of getting audited is greater, predicated on 1) it\u2019s illegal at the federal level, and 2) it\u2019s a heavily cash-based industry, which makes it a target for an audit. not having banking is one of the biggest challenges for these companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

compliance is another major obstacle. the differences in taxation from state to state are relatively simple \u2013 just a matter of a sales tax and any special marijuana taxes. but compliance can get pretty complicated. some states \u2013 oklahoma, for example, which has over 9,000 licensed cannabis businesses, many of them small mom-n-pops \u2013 are a piece of cake, relatively speaking.<\/p>\n

others \u2013 looking at you, california \u2013 involve bureaucracies so dense that they almost seem designed to relegate the industry to large corporations or just keep it where it\u2019s always been \u2013 underground, where things are in many ways simpler.<\/p>\n

love in a time of cannabis<\/strong><\/p>\n

compliance is where the accounting and legal professions overlap. there, suchoff said, \u201cwe inevitably get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

as she ushers her clients toward legality \u2013 ushering them toward becoming c corporations rather than limited liability companies \u2013 she often works with their attorneys to keep everything legit. in fact, she\u2019s gained so much knowledge of the legal side of the industry that she\u2019s decided to become an attorney herself. she\u2019s studying for the lsat exam, and she expects to be in law school soon.<\/p>\n

she hopes to become an attorney by the time marijuana is descheduled from the list of dangerous narcotics. still, she\u2019s not going to give up her real calling in life.<\/p>\n
