active duty service members have plenty to worry about. in addition to the mres, ieds,\u00a0and rpgs, there\u2019s the irs. like all american workers, military personnel, including those in combat zones, have to pay taxes, but calculating what they owe can be as complicated as patrolling the streets of mosul.\u00a0a good tax preparer might be able to help these 2.1 million active duty, reserve,\u00a0and national guard, but it takes a little extra training.<\/p>\n

military personnel in combat zones and qualified hazardous duty areas get a little break on their due date. they don\u2019t have to file until 180 days after they leave the combat zone. (even that deadline is easier said than calculated.) if they get home leave, they might be able to see a tax professional.<\/p>\n

but is 180 days enough? the rules for military personnel are specialized and a bit complicated, and it\u2019s hard to get help overseas. according to the tax advocacy service, service members face several special challenges, and so do tax practitioners who want to help them.<\/p>\n
