comparison to 2017 remains a challenge because this year’s jan. 29 season opener lops a full six days off the same reporting periods.<\/p>\n

the irs had received 30.9 million individual income tax returns as of feb. 9, down 3.8 percent from the same period last year, when there had been six more filing days. it has processed 30 million returns this year, down 4.5 percent.<\/p>\n

the irs has processed 97.2 percent of returns received in 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n

there have been 29.7 million returns e-filed, down 3.6 percent. of those, tax pros filed 12.6 million, down 7 percent, and self-preparers tackled 17.1 million, down 0.9 percent.<\/p>\n

tax pros handled 42.3 percent of e-filed returns to date, up from 38.5 percent reported the previous week.<\/p>\n

visits to the irs.gov website continue to soar, up 15.8 percent to 114.2 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n

refunds totaled 13.5 million, down 3.9 percent. the total amount refunded two weeks in was $28.9 billion, just 0.2 percent less than last year. the average refund was 3.7 percent higher at $2,135.<\/p>\n

direct deposit refunds fared slightly better, totaling 12.7 million, down 2.7 percent. the total amount refunded, $27.9 billion, is up 0.4 percent and the average refund of $2,198 reflects a 3.2 percent increase.<\/p>\n
