do you remember what was at the top of your mind back in high school?

a career in accountancy, right?

right. maybe. but probably not. you probably had other priorities. you probably didn’t even know what accountants did all day, other than wear suits and crank adding machines.

today’s high school students, too, have other priorities and misconceptions.

what’s at the top of their minds? environmental apocalypse, school shootings, the price of gas, vape flavors, ukraine, reproductive rights, trump, banned books, covid-19, lgbtqia2s issues, canadian forest fires, nuclear weapons, killer heat, ai, the meaning of life and of course that old favorite, you-know-what.

time out to consider a career

they might also take time out to consider a career in business, technology, criminal investigation or international finance, never realizing that a career in accounting can include any of those careers.

the aicpa wants to change that.

and there’s no time to lose. the supply of incoming professionals is falling far short of demand, and the supply is dwindling even as demand grows.

grabbing them by their tiktoks

while it’s important for state cpa societies to reach out to high schoolers with programs and printed materials, odds are that the target audience is more interested in what’s on tiktok, twit, instawhatever and other social media platforms.

in fact, they might even give the tiktok pitch more credibility than they give a flesh-and-blood accountant trying to explain why accounting is exciting.

in a multipronged approach to the minds of teens already mulling a college major, the aicpa is rolling out several initiatives under an umbrella named “this way to cpa.”

yes, it’s on tiktok, and the number of followers is well beyond 13,000 and growing.

and it’s on the web (thiswaytocpa.com).

and there’s a series of aicpa webinars that make the connections between accounting and such enticing fields as forensics and sustainability issues. an incredible 12,000 students signed up for these initiatives in 2022, and it looks like 2023 might see 16,000 more.

by august, the aicpa will roll out a career launchpad program that guides students through accounting-oriented skill building and interview preparation.

for brighter, more serious students, a college board ap business principles course will be including concepts in accounting as of 2025, and soon there will be an advanced placement course specifically in accounting.

what are they thinking?

how much of this will actually appeal to a gen z that has its collective mind pulled in so many directions – some silly, some existential – is as yet unknown. but by the end of the year, clearview research should be able to give us a better idea of gen z motivations. an ongoing study is expected to
