early in june, apple’s tim cook wrote to legislators involved in the drafting of the american data privacy and protection act (adppa). in the letter, cook said apple realizes there are several outstanding issues but that areas of agreement outweigh the differences.

cook argued privacy is a “fundamental human right” for apple and that the company believes in protecting users and, by default, their information. cook stated apple minimizes data collected, offers user transparency on what data is collected and how it is used, and builds systems to protect user information.

the 2021 accounting firm operations and technology survey has turned up interesting findings in how firms are maximizing their use of technology.

here are some highlights, but note that percentages related to “all firms” are heavily skewed to firms of under 10 employees, which accounted for 66 percent of respondents:
drone wars: walmart plans to expand to 4 million homes
walmart is expanding its air war against amazon, planning to reach 4 million households by the end of the year.

walmart, the brick-and-mortar retail giant plans to offer the service from 34 locations in six states. when the service started, only a single store in arkansas offered it. however, the retail giant hopes to reach up to 4 million households by the end of 2022.

droneup, a company in which walmart has invested, will operate the service between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., delivering packages weighing less than 10 pounds. there will be a charge of $3.99 for the delivery. once received, the order is boxed and a droneup pilot flies the drone to the customer’s location, easing the box gently down on the front lawn with a claw-like device at the end of a sturdy cable.

backing up to the cloud is in a curious position. it’s the most popular primary system for accounting firms, but it’s on a decline, whether it’s handled by the firm or a vendor.
cloud backup was chosen by 37.3 percent of respondents to the accounting firm operations and technology survey, down from 42.3 percent.
