the e-filing margin between tax professionals and self-preparers is narrowing. still, the pace of e-filing by tax professionals is running 10% behind the same time last year.

as of march 3, the irs had received 61.1 million individual income tax returns, down 8.5 percent from the same period last year, although 2017 has had four fewer processing days so we’re comparing oranges to tangerines.

that’s the only filing statistic on the positive side, though. four fewer reporting days than at the same time last year has most markers down around 10 percent.

with 20.18 million returns received as of feb. 3, the latest data available, the agency had processed 19.97 million or 98.9 percent of them.

of course, since it comes from the irs, it also has its own set of footnotes and qualifiers. for one, even though we’re comparing the week ending jan. 27, 2017, with the week ending jan. 29, 2016, the 2016 figure included four more days of tax return processing – although when comparing identical numbers of days, 2017 marks an increase. for another, the new law requiring a hold on refunds involving the earned income tax credit and additional child tax credit until feb. 15 is skewing early season refund numbers and dollar amounts, because many taxpayers claiming these credits are early filers. read more →

the irs had received 107.45 million individual income tax returns as of april 8, down 3 percent from the same period last year. it had processed 104.53 million returns, down 3.2 percent.

refunds to individual income tax filers topped the $200 billion mark as the 2016 filing season entered its final month.

the internal revenue service had received 89.41 million individual returns by march 25, down 0.9 percent from the same time in 2015. it had processed 86.91 million of those returns, down 1.6 percent. while slowing, that’s still a 97.2 percent processing rate.

self-preparers continue to gain ground on tax pros in e-filing, according to new data from the irs.

e-filing receipts overall are up 0.5 percent, to 62.63 million. but while tax pro filings are down 2.5 percent, to 32.6 million, self-preparers are up 3.9 percent, to 30.04 million. the professionals are holding on to 52 percent of the total to date in 2016.
