dear [managing partner’s name],

as we start thinking about the next tax season, i am reaching out with a request that reflects the sentiment of many of us in the firm. i know tax season is crucial, and we all understand its importance. however, after all these years, we’re in a never-ending marathon. the long hours, the constant pressure—it’s draining. what if we could flip the script this year and make the next tax season, dare i say, a little less soul-crushing?

i have a few ideas—some might seem unconventional, but we must get creative to avoid the same burnout cycles. hear me out, in no particular order: read more →

as the end of 2024 draws closer, tax advisors and taxpayers should prepare for major changes that could significantly impact tax bills. art werner highlights an upcoming challenge: the scheduled expiration of the tax cuts and jobs act (tcja), which was signed into law in 2017 and brought significant tax breaks and lower tax rates.

like many tax laws, the tcja was designed to “self-destruct,” meaning its provisions will sunset at the close of 2025 unless congress takes action.

is the irs adequately tracking corporate tax evasion?

the inspector general smells something fishy.

by 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research

believe it not, there are large american corporations that establish a pseudo-presence in other countries for the sole purpose of evading taxes.

and that’s not the only trick in the corporate books.

granted, sometimes those tricks are legitimate tax tactics. the tax code has loopholes, and that’s what they’re for.

needless to say, corporate tax strategy can get pretty complicated. there is an entire industry of lawyers, accountants and wealth management professionals dedicated to walking the fine line between evasion and due diligence in the interest of shareholders.

irs still unsure how to measure audit rate

data table

differing definitions are only part of the problem.

by 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research

the inflation reduction act endowed the irs with almost $80 billion to improve customer service and beef up enforcement. congress later reduced the amount to $57.8 billion, with $24 billion earmarked for enforcement.

in no time at all, there was misinformation bouncing around social media and conservative podcasts, claiming that the ira would result in more audits of middle-class taxpayers.

the enforcement resources had no such designation. to allay fears, in 2022 the secretary of the treasury directed the irs commissioner not to use any of the additional resources to increase the audit rate of small businesses or households earning below $400,000.

three ways to thrive with limited capacity

turn the staffing shortage into a new opportunity.

the relentless cpa

charles dickens had to be writing about the accounting profession when he wrote, “it was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

clients are plentiful. i met a new client coming out of the restroom at our office complex. we get four to five inquiries a day – out of tax season. during tax season, we turned down four out of five prospective clients.

staff are not plentiful – at least not good ones. i’m getting two or three resumes a day, but they’re the warm body sort most of us learned the hard way not to hire during the pandemic. you’ve seen these resumes too. they are people with six employers in eight years. you are certain to be number seven in nine years. they claim eight years of experience, but you can see from their job history that it’s really two years of experience repeated four times. and – they want $100k for those two years of real experience.
