as of the week ending feb. 9 – the latest for which data are available – the irs had received 25.6 million individual income tax returns, down 11.4 percent from the same period a year ago. it had processed 25.4 million returns, down 4.4 percent.

of course, these aren’t statistically equivalent comparisons. the 2024 filing season opened jan. 29 and had been open 12 days, whereas the 2023 season began jan. 23 and had been open 19 days by the same week. it looks, though, like many figures are catching up quickly and the seven-day difference soon will make no difference.

e-filings

electronic filings made up 97.8 percent of returns and totaled 25 million, down 8.3 percent. tax pros e-filed 9.4 million, down 11.7 percent, and self-preparers handled 15.6 million, down 6.1 percent.

professionals held 37.7 percent of the market share.

website visits

visits to irs.gov were the only positive for the week. at 158.6 million, they were up 6 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 7.5 million, down 43.9 percent, in the total amount of $13 billion, down 51.1 percent. the average refund of $1,741 was down 12.8 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 7.4 million, down 39.1 percent, in the total amount of $13.6 billion, down 46.5 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $1,831 was down 12.1 percent.

direct deposit is used by 99.1 percent of filers.

update: the irs later added this footnote: total refunds issued represents returns received and processed in 2024 – the current year only. the number of direct deposit refunds represents returns received in the current and prior year but processed in 2024.
