help clients stay on track with these odometer assistants.

app of the week
national odometer day (may 12) encourages people to check their odometers and keep up with vehicle maintenance as their vehicles age. but it can also be a great reminder that we itemizers are losing money if we’re not tracking the mileage we drive for work.

there are several options available, but here are my three favorites and why:
mileiq is the experienced grandfather of this category. the mileage tracker runs in the background on your phone to track business drives, making your tracking easy and effortless. a personal trial account is free and includes up to 40 drives, or you can invest the $59.99 per year for unlimited trips. business accounts are also available. the teams lite is $50 per user per year and allows you to add or remove drivers and includes streamlined billing. the upgrade is $80 per user per year and allows you to consolidate and submit reports and includes a reporting dashboard. teams pro accounts are $100 per user per year. that upgrade allows you to have multiple admins, personalized support and customized reimbursement rates.
hurdlr exploded with the growth of doordash, lyft and other gig-economy driving jobs. hurdlr tracks all of your mileage, expenses, income streams and tax deductions and, according to the app, people find more than $5,600 in tax deductions on average (can you say, “tax hero?”). the free version is perfect for people with side hustles and allows unlimited mileage tracking, adding income and expenses, a tax summary calculator and more. the premium version adds a real-time calculator for state and self-employment taxes. meanwhile, the pro subscription allows you to invoice, invite your accountant, advanced reports and full double-entry accounting. enterprise subscriptions are also available.
last but certainly not least – mainly because it’s free – is stride. this 100% free option was made by a health insurance company. i find this puzzling, but people love it. the app automatically tracks your mileage and expenses and prepares irs-ready tax summaries.
