the minimum hike year over year is 4.4 percent. according to the latest data available, these are average hourly earnings:
- profession overall: $38.88, up $1.80 or 4.9% for the year but down 27 cents or 0.7% for the month
- staff in profession: $29.98, up $1.28 or 4.5% for the year and 15 cents or 0.5% for the month
- cpa firms overall: $41.05, up $2.82 or 7.4% for the year but down 62 cents or 1.5% for the month
- staff in cpa firms: $31.92, up $1.74 or 5.8% for the year and 3 cents or 0.1% for the month
- payroll services overall: $39.01, up $1.63 or 4.4% for the year, 31 cents or 0.8% for the month
- staff in payroll services: $30.61, up $2.30 or 8.1% for the year and 2 cents or 0.1% for the month
the u.s. bureau of labor statistics also reported the national unemployment rate dipping to 3.5% as nonfarm payroll employment rose by 528,000 in july. professional and business services added 89,000 of those jobs and is 986,000 higher than in february 2020.
the accounting profession overall had 1,107,000 members in july, down 1,500 or 0.1% for the month but up 49,100 or 4.6% for the year. they worked an average 36.3 weekly hours, up 18 minutes or 0.8% for the month and flat for the year.
staff in accounting numbered 805,600, a new high, up 7,700 or 1% for the month and 43,700 or 5.7% for the year. their hours at 35.2 were up 24 minutes or 1.1% for the month and 18 minutes or 0.9% for the year.
cpa firms
cpa firms employed 513,600, up 1,400 or 0.3% for the month and 9,000 or 1.8% for the year. employees put in 37.1 hours, up 48 minutes or 2.2% for the month and 6 minutes or 0.3% for the year.
staff in cpa firms numbered 355,700, up 400 or 0.1% for the month and 5,300 or 1.5% for the year. they worked 35.4 hours, up 12 minutes or 0.6% for the month and 36 minutes or 1.7% for the year.
tax preparation
tax preparation services leaped to 110,600, up 11,500 or 11.6% for the month and 18,700 or 20.3% for the year.
payroll services
payroll services employed 202,000, down 1,100 or 0.5% for the month but up 21,100 or 11.7% for the year. workers averaged 36.6 hours, up 1 hour 12 minutes or 3.4% for the month but down 54 minutes or 2.4% for the year.
staff in payroll numbered 170,300, down 200 or 0.1% for the month but up 23,100 or 15.7% for the year. they worked 36.4 hours, up 54 minutes or 2.5% for the month but down 2 hours 24 minutes or 6.2% for the year.
bookkeeping
other accounting services continued a slow increase, hitting 290,800, up 1,700 or 0.6% for the month and 19,000 or 7% for the year.
women
women in the profession totaled 707,000, up 3,700 or 0.5% for the month and 41,000 or 6.2% for the year. in cpa firms they numbered 311,000, down 2,500 or 0.8% for the month and 800 or 0.3% for the year. women in payroll services dipped slightly to 101,300, down 100 or 0.1% for the month but up 10,700 or 11.8% for the year.
