not only do these tools help ease the pressure of capacity problems, but they may also provide firms with a new revenue stream when they extend that expertise into their clients’ businesses.

the greatest benefits will accrue to leaders who exercise intentionality across many areas of their firms: in their adoption of tech, in making changes to processes, in communication with clients and team members, in accepting the right clients, and in setting aside time for marketing.

key takeaways:

  • if you try just one new thing per month that makes even a 5 percent improvement, at the end of the year, you’ll have made big changes to your firm’s processes.
  • find new ways to compensate your team that incentivize efficiency. connect compensation to the services provided. consider developing packages of services that simplify pricing. clients like knowing the price upfront, and it empowers team members to present services and prices with confidence. firms that are doing this are having amazing success. test this with a few clients to begin with, then roll it out as you have success.
  • think about the data you need to collect so you can make decisions about firm initiatives based on data, not just guesses. this may require capturing new kinds of data so you can gauge success.
  • smaller firms need a deliberate approach to marketing to produce the kinds of clients they desire. this can be hard when the firm owner is also the one doing the work. set aside a certain number of hours a week for business development.
  • the most successful people are those who are resourceful. before asking for help, they try to find the answer themselves. however, there is a delicate balance between seeking the answers and spinning their tires.
  • prepare others when you’re making a change. people are comfortable when they have advance notice.
  • follow the example of amazon, which created logistics and cloud computing solutions for their own needs, and created businesses out of selling those services to others. as accountants create solutions with no-code tools for their own firms, think of ways those solutions or that expertise can be extended into your client’s businesses.
