tough to find employees to fill accounting posts? someone is managing. overall employment in the accounting profession rose to 1,101,900 in may, up 15,600 or 1.4 percent for the month and 52,000 or 5 percent for the year.

every sector of the industry is pushing ahead with salary increases or new hiring, or both.


nationally, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 390,000 in may, according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, and the unemployment rate was 3.6 percent for the third month in a row. employment in professional and business services rose by 75,000 in may, and was 821,000 higher than in february 2020.

overall accounting profession

weekly hours averaged 36.3, down 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month but up 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the year. earnings overall averaged $38.29 per hour, down 20 cents or 0.5 percent for the month but up $1.91 or 5.3 percent for the year.

staff numbered 789,400, up 6,100 or 0.8 percent for the month and 40,800 or 5.5 percent for the year. they put in 35.1 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and up half an hour or 1.4 percent for the year. earnings at $29.65 were down 16 cents or 0.5 percent for the month but up $1.27 or 4.5 percent for the year.

cpa firms

cpa firms employed 510,500, up 1,800 or 0.4 percent for the month and 10,700 or 2.1 percent for the year. hours at 36.8 were down 12 minutes or 0.5 percent for the month but up 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the year. hourly earnings at cpa firms hit a record high of $40.40, up 15 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and $2.59 or 6.9 percent for the year.

staff at cpa firms numbered 351,100, up 3,600 or 1 percent for the month and 8,200 or 2.4 percent for the year. they worked 35.4 hours weekly, up 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month and 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the year. they made $31.30, down 25 cents or 0.8 percent for the month but up $1.76 or 6 percent for the year.

tax preparation

payroll services grew to 199,400, up 1,800 or 0.9 percent for the month and 23,700 or 13.5 percent for the year. employees put in 35.9 hours, up 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the month but down an hour or 2.7 percent for the year. earnings dropped under $40 for the first time since october, to $38.93, down $1.22 or 3 percent for the month but up $1.78 or 4.8 percent for the year.

payroll staff numbered 167,500, up 700 or 0.4 percent for the month and 25,700 or 18.1 percent for the year. they averaged 36.5 hours, up 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the month but down 1 hour 48 minutes or 4.7 percent for the year. they made $31.03, down 25 cents or 0.8 percent for the month but up $1.78 or 6.1 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

employees in other accounting services totaled 285,900, up 1,500 or 0.5 percent for the month and 18,600 or 7 percent for the year.
