women lag men in accounting jobs recovery

across the tax and accounting industry, almost all the jobs relinquished by men in the coronavirus layoffs have been regained by men. the jobs given up by women, on the other hand, are still largely vacant.

overall, the tax, accounting, tax prep, payroll, and bookkeeping sectors employed 1.02 million full-time equivalents in march 2020, before 70,000 layoffs hit in april. so far, the industry has re-filled all but 17,600 positions.

today, men have taken back all but 1,000 positions. and 17,500 posts once occupied by women remain unfilled.

although lagging in other sectors, women from cpa firms have retaken 7,900 jobs, while men have regained only 2,000. women lead at payroll agencies.

in the latest month of data available, women hold 301,700 spots at cpa firms, down 600, or 0.2 percent, for the month, and 7,900, or 2.6 percent for the year. in payroll services, they reached 83,800, up 1,100, or 1.3 percent, for the month, but down 8,400, or 9.1 percent for the year.

women’s numbers in the accounting profession declined to 638,100, down 2,600 or 0.4 percent for the month and 17,500 or 2.7 percent for the year, even as overall employment in accounting crept up for the third straight month, reaching 1,000,900 in march.

total positions were up 400 or statistically flat for the month, but down 17,600 or 1.7 percent for the year.

weekly hours at 36.1 were down 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the month and 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the year.

hourly earnings hit a new high at $36.58, up 42 cents or 1.2 percent for the month and $1.11 or 3.1 percent for the year.

staff numbers dipped to 728,600, down 3,100 or 0.4 percent for the month and 35,600 or 4.7 percent for the year. they worked an average 34.7 hours per week, with changes of 12 minutes or 0.6 percent – down for the month but up for the year.

earnings topped $28 for the first time to reach $28.59, up 69 cents or 2.5 percent for the month and 89 cents or 3.2 percent for the year.

cpa firms

cpa firms employed 490,900, down 2,200 or 0.4 percent for the month and 9,900 or 2 percent for the year. workers averaged 35.9 hours, down 1 hour 48 minutes or 4.8 percent for the month and 1 hour or 2.7 percent for the year.

they earned $38.34 an hour – a dime over two months ago – up 96 cents or 2.6 percent for the month and 92 cents or 2.5 percent for the year.

staff at cpa firms declined about the same number, down 2,100 to 335,000, a dip of 0.6 percent for the month and 21,500 or 6 percent for the year. their hours at 34.9 weekly were less than 35 for the first time since april 2020, down 1 hour 36 minutes or 4.4 percent for the month and 1 hour 6 minutes or 3.1 percent for the year.

earnings at $29.83 were up 55 cents or 1.9 percent for the month and $1.31 or 4.6 percent for the year.

tax prep

tax preparation services slid slightly to 95,500, down 500 or 0.5 percent for the month but up 3,000 or 3.2 percent for the year.

payroll services

payroll services employed 166,800, down 1,900 or 1.1 percent for the month and 12,800 or 7.1 percent for the year. workers put in 37.6 hours, up 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the month and 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the year.

earnings skyrocketed above $37 for the first time, at $37.67 up $1.54 or 4.3 percent for the month and $3.12 or 9 percent for the year.

staff in payroll numbered 134,500, down 4,400 or 3.2 percent for the month and 15,300 or 10.2 percent for the year. they averaged 37.7 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and 1 hour or 2.7 percent for the year.

earnings topped $30 for the first time at $30.58, up $1.82 or 6.3 percent for the month and $1.56 or 5.4 percent for the year.

other accounting services

bookkeeping nudged up to a record 263,200, up 1,000 or 0.4 percent for the month and 4,000 or 1.5 percent for the year.
