unemployment edged down to 6.7 percent in november, but the accounting profession saw few of those gains, with its only upticks coming in the payroll services sector.

total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 245,000 for the month according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics. at 10.7 million, the number of unemployed persons continued to trend down but remained 4.9 million higher than in february. similarly, the unemployment rate was down by 8.0 percentage points from its april high but still 3.2 percentage points higher than it was in february.
employment in professional and business services grew by 60,000 in november, with about half the gain (32,000) occurring in temporary help services. employment in the sector is down by 1.1 million since february.
tax and accounting overall
employment in the accounting profession stood at 1,008,600 in november, down 2,400 or 0.2 percent for the month and 23,300 or 2.3 percent for the year. weekly hours were flat at 36.1. hourly earnings of $36.30 were up 55 cents or 1.5 percent for the month and $1.52 or 4.4 percent for the year.
staff numbered 740,600, up 1,100 or 0.1 percent for the month but down 36,800 or 4.7 percent for the year. they averaged 34.6 hours, down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month but up 48 minutes or 2.4 percent for the year. their earnings at $27.99 were the second highest ever – a dime short of april’s record – and up 18 cents or 0.6 percent for the month and 46 cents or 1.7 percent for the year.
cpa firms
cpa firms employed 482,700, down 1,200 or 0.2 percent for the month and 12,100 or 2.4 percent for the year. employees logged 37 hours, down 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.5 percent for the year. they made a record $37.96 an hour, up 21 cents or 0.6 percent for the month and $1.15 or 3.1 percent for the year.
staff in cpa firms numbered 334,200, down 1,200 or 0.4 percent for the month and 20,100 or 5.7 percent for the year. their hours at 36.1 were down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month but up 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the year. their earnings ticked up a penny for the month to a new high of $29.67, up $1.13 or 4 percent for the year.
tax prep
tax preparation services employed 94,400, down 1,200 or 1.3 percent for the month and 2,100 or 2.2 percent for the year.
payroll services
payroll services had 167,300 workers, up 4,600 or 2.8 percent for the month but down 12,600 or 7 percent for the year. their hours at 38 were flat for the month but up 1 hour 48 minutes or 5 percent for the year. they earned $36 an hour, up 74 cents or 2.1 percent for the month and $3.40 or 10.4 percent for the year.
staff in payroll services numbered 141,100, up 4,800 or 3.5 percent for the month but down 9,600 or 6.4 percent for the year. they worked 38.4 hours, down 24 minutes or 1 percent for the month but up 3 hours 12 minutes or 9.1 percent for the year. they made $28.23 an hour, up 34 cents or 1.2 percent for the month but down 42 cents or 1.5 percent for the year.
bookkeeping
other accounting services employed 264,800, up 700 or 0.3 percent for the month but down 1,600 or 0.6 percent for the year.
women
there were 647,300 women employed in the profession, up 1,500 or 0.2 percent for the month but down 16,300 or 2.5 percent for the year. cpa firms employ 300,600 women, up 400 or 0.1 percent for the month but down 7,000 or 2.3 percent for the year. women in payroll dipped slightly to 85,600, down 100 or 0.1 percent for the month and 8,500 or 9 percent for the year.
