nothing seems to have changed except my title and compensation arrangement, which hasn’t even started yet. do you have any suggestions of what i should do?
answer: this is a good question and while it seems obvious, there is not much training or mentoring for people who become partners. as a partner your status changes and so should your role.
here are some tips that i think will apply to new partners in any size firm:
- you are an owner and regardless of your background and specialties, you should be starting to bring in business. there are two types of work you can generate – with new clients and existing clients.
- use the momentum of becoming a new partner to ask referral sources for “help” by telling them you are a new partner and they are looking for you to start to make some rain and ask for referrals. people like to help people who need help and you will be telling them you need help. this might sound corny, but it is effective.
- you do not need any training or experience to ask for referrals. you might need it to meet with the prospect or to close the client. if you do you can bring a more seasoned partner. actually, it is never a bad idea to bring someone with you. it gives you two chances to bond or establish a relationship. having an experienced rainmaker with you will enable you to watch how things are done and you can try to adopt techniques that seem to work or that you are comfortable with.
- becoming a new partner is obviously a one-time experience. you can use this reason for a limited time – maybe up to two years – so get started and do not waste the opportunity.
by the way, this is also great advice for someone starting a practice. same info but tell them you just started your own practice and need the business and will appreciate the referrals. it works!
