question: occasionally i receive requests to perform accounting services for free for not-for-profit organizations. i usually ignore them. do you have any suggestions on how to handle these emails?

answer: i do not think they should be ignored. at a minimum you can send a response such as: “unfortunately i cannot help you. i also do not know of anyone i could refer to you. good luck.”

i do recommend that accountants get involved on the boards of charitable organizations where they feel a connection and would like to help them in their goals.

usually accountants become the treasurer or work in some other financial capacity such as budgeting or obtaining grants. in my firm, many of our partners serve on multiple boards. at one time, two partners were chairmen of two major hospitals in our area at the same time – a very proud accomplishment for them and our firm.

board membership is a great idea on a bunch of levels – community service and marketing to start.
