the internal revenue service had received 142.4 million individual income tax returns, down 2 percent from the same period in 2019, as of july 3, the latest data available. it had processed 130.6 million returns, down 9.5 percent.
electronic filings totaled 129.4 million, down 0.8 percent. of those, 66.6 million were processed by tax professionals, down 9.8 percent. self-preparers handled 62.8 million, up 10.9 percent.
the pros kept 51.5 percent of the e-filing market share.
visits to irs.gov at 1,332.8 billion were up 161.3 percent.
refunds numbered 95.2 million, down 9.6 percent, in the total amount of $263 billion, down 8.7 percent. the average refund of $2,762 was up 0.9 percent.
direct deposit refunds numbered 79.1 million, down 11.2 percent, in the total amount of $230 million, down 10.7 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $2,901 was up 0.6 percent.
