got whiplash? job sectors that saw figures plummet in last month’s report are seeing them climbing back, albeit not as quickly.

the tax and accounting industry has quickly added back about half of the jobs lost in the covid-19 shutdown – just in time to finish the hyper-extended tax season, according to the latest 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 jobs report. but what happens next is anybody’s guess.

economic activity that was stunted in march and april because of the covid-19 pandemic was seeing reversals as businesses resumed operation, according to the most recent labor statistics. among the sectors gaining jobs was professional and business services, which added 306,000 jobs in june, although employment remained 1.8 million below the february level. overall nationally, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 4.8 million in june, and the unemployment rate declined to 11.1 percent.

overall profession employment

after a dip below the 1 million mark for the past two months – understandably, we likely can agree, yes? – employment in the accounting profession stood at 1,016,100 in june, up 17,500 or 1.8 percent for the month but down 12,300 or 1.2 percent for the year. employees worked an average 36.4 hours weekly, up 1 hour or 2.8 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.6 percent year over year. they earned on average $35.15 per hour, down 63 cents or 1.8 percent for the month but up $1.14 or 3.4 percent for the year.

staff numbers rebounded almost halfway, to 735,800, up 34,500 after falling by 70,600 the previous month. the new mark is up 4.9 percent for the month but down 33,500 or 4.4 percent for the year. staff put in 34.7 hours, up 1 hour or 3 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year. hourly earnings at $27.83 were down 26 cents or 0.9 percent for the month but up $1.18 or 4.4 percent for the year.

cpa firms

cpa firms headed back toward their half-million mark at 487,800, up 11,700 or 2.5 percent for the month and flat for the year. employees worked 37.3 hours, up 2 hours for the month, which sounds hideous but it’s a bounce back from a drop of 1 hour 36 minutes the previous month. the mark is up 5.7 percent for the month and flat for the year. earnings at $37.45 were down 33 cents or 0.9 percent for the month but up $1.30 or 3.6 percent for the year.

staff at cpa firms numbered 340,900, up 10,500 or 3.2 percent for the month but down 10,700 or 3 percent for the year. their hours echoed the jump seen by overall staff, up 2.5 hours after dropping 1.7 hours the month before. hours now are up 7.3 percent for the month and 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the year. staff earned $29.49, up 36 cents or 1.2 percent for the month and $1.94 or 7 percent for the year.

tax preparation

tax preparation services employed 94,200, up 2,900 or 3.2 percent for the month and 200 or 0.2 percent for the year.

payroll services

payroll services declined for the third straight month to 153,400, down 5,700 or 3.6 percent for the month and 23,600 or 13.3 percent for the year. employees worked 37.3 hours, up 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the month and 1 hour 36 minutes or 4.5 percent for the year. their earnings dipped to $34.65, down 8 cents or 0.2 percent for the month but up $3.32 or 10.6 percent for the year.

staff in payroll declined as well to 128,600, down 4,700 or 3.5 percent for the month and 18,700 or 12.7 percent for the year. they worked 36.4 hours, flat for the month and up 2 hours 6 minutes or 6.1 percent for the year. their earnings dipped to $27.94, down 28 cents or 1 percent for the month but up 57 cents or 2.1 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

there were 255,400 employees in other accounting services, up 10,600 or 4.3 percent for the month but down 7,000 or 2.7 percent for the year.

women

women in the profession numbered 637,400, up 27,100 or 4.4 percent for the month but down 13,800 or 2.1 percent for the year. cpa firms had 301,700 women employees, up 8,800 or 3 percent for the month (following a 16,000 drop) and 2,200 or 0.7 percent for the year. women in payroll numbered 82,300, down 2,500 or 2.9 percent for the month and 7,600 or 8.5 percent for the year.
