tax pros fall behind 6.2% in returns filed

the year-to-year gap in professional tax preparations continues to grow, stretching past 2.9 million in this oddest of seasons.

the irs had received 90.6 million individual income returns, down 2.4 percent from the same period a year ago, as of the week ending march 27, the latest data released. it had processed 87 million returns, down 3.6 percent.

the agency’s processing rate stood at 96 percent.

e-filing receipts

e-filing receipts were down 2 percent at 85.6 million. the split fell 44.5 million to tax professionals, down 6.2 percent, and 41.1 million to self-preparers, up 3 percent.

despite the continued trend of negatives for pros and positives for diyers, the professionals held the edge with 52 percent of the market share.

website visits

visits to irs.gov were up 10.2 percent to 394.7 million.

refunds

refunds numbered 69.9 million, down 2.5 percent, in the total amount of $203.4 billion, down 1.3 percent. the average refund of $2,908 was up 1.2 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 59 million, down 8.1 percent, in the total amount of $180.5 billion, down 6.2 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $3,058 was up 2.1 percent.
