as of the week ending feb. 7, the latest data available, the internal revenue service had received 28.7 million individual income tax returns, down 0.4 percent from the same week last year. it had processed 27.5 million, down 2.1 percent.

the irs had processed 96.1 percent of returns received.

e-filing receipts

of the total returns received, 96.9 percent or 27.8 million were e-filed, up 0.6 percent. tax professionals prepared 10.6 million, down 3.7 percent, while diyers e-filed 17.2 million, up 3.5 percent. tax pros handled 38.1 percent of e-filings, down from 39.9 percent the same time last year.

website visits

visits to irs.gov numbered 110.9 million, up 4.2 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 10.8 million, down 4.8 percent. the total amount of $21.2 billion was down 4.6 percent. the average refund of $1,952 was up 0.2 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 10.3 million in the total amount of $20.6 billion, both figures down 4.4 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $1,995 was down 0.1 percent.

direct deposit accounted for 95.2 percent of refunds and 97.3 percent of the total amount. on average, direct deposit refunds were 2.2 percent higher than their paper counterparts.
