maybe it’s not time to rock the boat. the accounting profession is more than holding its own, with new highs seen in:

  • overall earnings,
  • staff earnings,
  • cpa firm staff numbers and earnings, and
  • payroll services earnings.

in october, nationwide employment rose by 128,000 and the unemployment rate was little changed at 3.6 percent, according to the latest data available to 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 research. though the number of unemployed persons, at 5.9 million, changed little for the month, two events had impacts:

  • within manufacturing, employment in motor vehicles and parts decreased because of strike activity, and
  • federal government employment was down as the number of temporary jobs for the 2020 census dropped.

in professional and business services, employment trended up in october, at 22,000. the industry has added an average of 33,000 jobs per month so far in 2019, healthy but still behind the average gain of 47,000 jobs per month in 2018.

employment in the profession rose to 1,060,100, up 1,800 or 0.2 percent for the month and 36,800 or 3.6 percent for the year. workers averaged 35.8 hours per week, down 36 minutes or 1.6 percent for the month and flat for the month. their hourly earnings hit a new high at $34.58, up 19 cents for the month and 83 cents for the year, respective upticks of 0.6 and 2.5 percent.

staff employment at 795,700 was up 1,300 or 0.2 percent for the month and 30,200 or 3.9 percent for the year. staff worked 33.8 hours, down 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the month and 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the year. they’re making record earnings of $27.33, up 17 cents or 0.6 percent for the month and $1.01 or 3.8 percent for the year.

cpa firms                            

cpa firms squeaked up 200 to a slight new mark of 496,400, statistically flat for the month and up 15,100 or 3.1 percent for the year. employees put in 36.9 hours, down 700 or 1.9 percent for the month and 400 or 1.1 percent for the year. they matched july’s earnings at $36.63, up 16 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and 26 cents or 0.7 percent for the year.

staff also hit a bare new high at 356,600, up 300 or 0.1 percent for the month and 10,700 or 3.1 percent for the year. they averaged 35.5 hours, down 42 minutes for the month and 24 minutes for the year, declines of 1.9 and 1.1 percent respectively. they topped $28 for the first time by 6 cents, up 32 cents or 1.2 percent for the month and 71 cents or 2.6 percent for the year.

tax preparation services

tax prep employed 105,400, up 800 or 0.8 percent for the month and 6,200 or 6.3 percent for the year.

payroll services

payroll services employed 192,900, up 100 or 0.1 percent for the month and 14,800 or 8.3 percent for the year. employees worked 35.8 hours per week, down 700 or 1.9 percent for the month and up 1,300 or 3.8 percent for the year. they made a record $32.12, up 26 cents or 0.8 percent for the month and $1.28 or 4.2 percent for the year.

payroll staff numbered 161,600, down 800 or 0.5 percent for the month but up 10,800 or 7.2 percent for the year. they worked 35 weekly hours, down 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the month but up half an hour or 1.4 percent for the year. they averaged $28.29 an hour, down 2 cents or 0.1 percent for the month but up 93 cents or 3.4 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

other accounting services employed 265,800, down 100 or statistically flat for the month but up 2,900 or 1.1 percent for the year.

women

women are filling the profession in record numbers at 678,400, up 1,300 or 0.2 percent for the month and 41,500 or 6.5 percent for the year. in cpa firms, they number 307,800, up 600 or 0.2 percent for the month and 14,600 or 5 percent for the year. there were 99,900 women in payroll services, down 1,000 or 1 percent for the month but up 13,500 or 15.6 percent for the year.
