nonfarm payroll employment rose 164,000 in july, leaving the national unemployment rate flat at 3.7 percent, according to the latest data. professional and technical services added 31,000 jobs in july, for a 12-month job gain of 300,000.
in the accounting profession, new highs were set in
- overall employment and hourly earnings;
- staff employment and hourly earnings;
- cpa firm overall employment and staff earnings;
- payroll services overall employment, overall earnings and staff employment;
- bookkeeping; and
- women overall and in payroll services.
employment in the accounting profession reached 1,059,600 in july, up 3,600 or 0.3 percent for the month and 42,900 or 4.2 percent for the year. that’s an acceleration from the 3.9 percent annualized growth rate from the previous month.
workers averaged 36.2 weekly hours for the fourth time this year, flat for the month and up 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the year.
they made $34.13 an hour, up 12 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and 94 cents or 2.8 percent for the year.
accounting staff numbered 792,300, up 2,700 or 0.3 percent for the month and 29,100 or 3.8 percent for the year. they worked 34.6 hours – as they have all of 2019 except april – flat for the month and up 36 minutes or 1.8 percent for the year. they earned another dime an hour to hit $26.73, up 0.4 percent for the month and 69 cents or 2.6 percent for the year.
cpa firms
cpa firms employed 493,100, up 800 or 0.2 percent for the month and 16,300 or 3.4 percent for the year. they worked 37.4 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and flat year over year. hourly earnings of $36.35 were up 18 cents or 0.5 percent for the month and 69 cents or 1.9 percent for the year.
staff at cpa firms numbered 354,300, the first decline of our report, down 300 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 8,800 or 2.5 percent for the year. hours at 36.1 were flat for the month and year both. earnings took a small uptick of 18 cents to $27.68, up 0.7 percent for the month and 80 cents or 3 percent for the year.
tax preparation services
tax prep had its fifth straight month of small growth, up 1,300 to 105,500, increases of 1.2 percent for the month and 3,300 or 3.2 percent for the year.
payroll services
payroll services grew to 195,100, up 3,200 or 1.7 percent for the month and 19,900 or 11.4 percent for the year. weekly hours dropped 6 minutes to 35.6, down 0.3 percent for the month but up 48 minutes or 2.3 percent for the year. earnings at $31.71 were up 36 cents or 1.1 percent for the month and $1.18 or 3.9 percent for the year.
staff in payroll leapt forward to 164,600, up 4,800 or 3 percent for the month and 17,500 or 11.9 percent for the year. they worked 34.6 hours, up 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for both the month and year. their pay dropped slightly to $27.26, down 3 cents or 0.1 percent for the month but up 52 cents or 1.9 percent for the year.
bookkeeping
other accounting services had 265,400 workers, up 2,200 or 0.8 percent for the month and 5,200 or 2 percent for the year.
women
the accounting profession employed 671,200 women, up 2,700 or 0.4 percent for the month and 35,700 or 5.6 percent for the year. at cpa firms their numbers shrank to 300,600, down 800 or 0.3 percent for the month but up 10,200 or 3.5 percent for the year. in payroll services they increased by 3,200 for the second straight month, hitting 100,500; that’s up 3.3 percent for the month and 13,300 or 15.3 percent for the year.
