one of the revolutions in remote connectivity is happening within your cell phone as digital cellular providers have beefed up and expanded their networks to provide reliable internet access to remote devices.

today, the vast majority of the united states and canada has access to the internet through the 4g digital cellular network at speeds of 1mpbs or more, which is adequate for remote access to most applications, particularly those hosted by cloud providers.

the key today is to determine which service is the best in your firm’s specific area of operations. once you have determined the optimal cellular provider where you work, you can connect laptops, tablets and smartphones to the internet via a smartphone integrated or external mobile cellular “hotspot.”

laptops can come with an integrated wireless access option when you order them, but the most utilized solution today is the phone’s integrated hotspot capability. while many firms provide a stipend to owners and managers to cover their mobile data plan, this traditionally has not been as prevalent with staff where a shared mobile hotspot such as the mifi mobile hotspot devices can be shared by five or more personnel in the field and utilize the current 4g networks. with 5g networks rolling out across the us beginning in 2018, and concerns around the difficulty in using client-provided internet access, it is anticipated that wireless broadband will increasingly become a secure and reliable remote internet connection alternative.

recommended action: evaluate the best vendor in your region of operations and use a digital cellular connection either through an external mifi device or smartphone “hotspot.”
