with the first march filing results in, tax season has leveled off considerably from the first rushes.

the irs had received 59.2 million individual income tax returns as of march 1, down 3.2 percent from the same week in 2018. it had processed 56.9 million of those, down 3.7 percent.

the agency’s processing rate was 96 percent.

e-filings

e-filings totaled 56.5 million, down 2.2 percent. tax professionals prepared 27 million, down 5.8 percent, while self-preparers filed 29.5 million, up 1.3 percent.

pros handled 47.8 percent of e-filings.

website visits

visits to irs.gov at 272.6 million were up 12.2 percent.

refunds

the average american defines irs success in terms of their own refund, and those were up again, although not as high as last week’s 1.3 percent. at $3,068, the average refund is 0.7 percent higher.

refunds numbered 46.4 million, down 4.2 percent, and totaled $142.4 billion, down 3.5 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 43.2 million, down 0.7 percent, and totaled $136.6 billion, down 0.8 percent. the average direct deposit refund at $3,159 was down 0.1 percent.

direct deposit accounts for 93.2 percent of refunds and 96 percent of the refund pot. those filing by direct deposit average refunds 3 percent higher than their paper counterparts.
