payroll agencies continue to show strong growth year over year on three fronts: employees at all levels, particularly women. and just in time for busy season, tax prep has good news to report. but cpa firms account for 1,200 of the 2,200 jobs lost in the latest month.
according to the latest data, the national unemployment rate edged up to 4.0 percent in january, affected in part by the partial federal government shutdown. professional and business services added 30,000 jobs and has increased by 546,000 in the past 12 months.
the tax & accounting profession
overall employment in the accounting profession took a slight dip in january to 1,028,400, down 2,200 or 0.2 percent for the month but up 36,300 or 3.7 percent for the year. workers averaged 36.1 hours weekly, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and half an hour or 1.4 percent for the year. they earned $33.87 an hour, up 19 cents for the month and $1.39 for the year, respective upticks of 0.6 and 4.3 percent.
staff employment stood at 772,100, up 1,200 or 0.2 percent for the month and 21,800 or 2.9 percent for the year. they worked 34.3 hours, up 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month and 18 minutes or 0.9 percent for the year. they made a record high $26.57, up 28 cents or 1.1 percent for the month and $1.05 or 4.1 percent for the year.
cpa firms, all employees
cpa offices employed 483,100, down 400 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 8,300 or 1.7 percent for the year. their hours came in at 37.6, up 12 minutes or 0.5 percent for the month and 1 hour or 2.7 percent for the year. hourly earnings at $36.08, down 4 cents or 0.1 percent for the month but up 96 cents or 2.7 percent for the year.
cpa firms, staff
staff at cpa firms numbered 347,900, down 800 or 0.2 percent for the month and 900 and 0.3 percent for the year. they worked 36.4 hours, up 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month and 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the year. they made $27.34, a penny off the record high and up 14 cents or 0.5 percent for the month, 58 cents or 2.2 percent for the year.
tax prep
tax preparation services employ 103,300, up 3,400 or 3.4 percent for the month and 12,400 or a stunning 13.6 percent for the year.
payroll agencies
payroll services had 183,100 workers, up 100 or 0.1 percent for the month and 12,200 or 7.1 percent for the year. they averaged 35 weekly hours, up 18 minutes or 0.9 percent for the month but down 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the year. they earned $29.94, down 14 cents or 0.5 percent for the month but up 56 cents or 1.9 percent for the year.
payroll staff numbered 155,700, up 1,300 or 0.8 percent for the month and 12,400 or 8.7 percent for the year. they worked 35.1 hours, up 42 minutes or 2 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year. they made $26.56 an hour, down a penny or statistically flat for the month but up 61 cents or 2.4 percent for the year.
bookkeeping
other accounting services employed 260,700, down 300 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 5,300 or 2.1 percent for the year.
women
women held 647,700 spots, up 3,900 or 0.6 percent for the month and 27,100 or 4.4 percent for the year. at cpa firms they number 295,300, up 100 or statistically flat for the month and 4,300 or 1.5 percent for the year. in payroll, women total 91,800, down 1,300 or 1.4 percent for the month but up 10,000 or 12.2 percent for the year.
