though the national unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.7 percent, total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 250,000 in october. professional and business services accounted for 35,000 of those jobs, and the sector has added 516,000 jobs in 2018.

all employees

the accounting profession has 1,014,100 employees as of october 2018, up 2,200 or 0.2 percent for the month and 16,100 or 1.6 percent for the year.

those employees work an average 35.8 hours per week for the third straight month, down 24 minutes or 1.1 percent year over year. there has been little variation for 2018 as the high was 35.9 and the low was 35.7. they earn $33.53 an hour, a new record, up 17 cents or 0.5 percent for the month and $1.48 or 4.6 percent for the year.

staff number 760,300, down 1,000 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 4,300 or 0.6 percent for the year. they work 33.9 hours for the third straight month, down 24 minutes or 1.2 percent for the year. they earn $26.24 an hour, a new high, up 14 cents or 0.5 percent for the month and 95 cents or 3.8 percent for the year.

cpa firms, all employees

cpa firms employ 486,700, down 100 or statistically flat for the month but up 8,100 or 1.7 percent for the year. they average 37.3 hours, flat and the same as two of the last three months, and up 48 minutes or 2.2 percent for the year. they earn a record $36.41, up 32 cents an hour or 0.9 percent for the month and $1.65 or 4.7 percent for the year.

cpa firms, staff

staff at cpa firms number 351,900, up 1,000 or 0.3 percent for the month but down 1,400 or 0.4 percent for the year. they work 36 hours, flat for the month and up 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the year. they make $27.37 hourly, up 31 cents for the month and 64 cents for the year, respective upticks of 1.1 and 2.4 percent.

tax prep

tax preparation services employ 90,900, down 1,200 or 1.3 percent for the month and 9,700 or 9.6 percent for the year.

payroll agencies

the payroll services sector has 175,800 workers, down 100 or 0.1 percent for the month but up 7,100 or 4.2 percent for the year. hours are below the 35 mark for the first time in 2018 at 34.7, down 36 minutes or 1.7 percent for the month and 1 hour or 2.8 percent for the year. earnings hit a high for the year at $30.60, up 43 cents or 1.4 percent for the month and $1.30 or 4.4 percent for the year.

staff in payroll number 148,500, down 900 or 0.6 percent for the month but up 6,200 or 4.4 percent for the year. they work 34.3 hours, down 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and 1 hour 6 minutes or 3.1 percent for the year. their pay hit a 2018 high at $27.26, up 26 cents or 1 percent for the month and $2.43 or 9.8 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

employment in other accounting services is flat for the month at 259,500, up 6,300 or 2.5 percent for the year.

women

women’s numbers are down slightly to 632,600, a decline of 1,000 or 0.2 percent for the month but an increase of 12,400 or 2 percent for the year. there are 296,500 at cpa firms, up 100 or statistically flat for the month and 2,300 or 0.8 percent for the year. women in payroll services number 84,800, down 1,200 or 1.4 percent for the month but up 8,900 or 11.7 percent for the year.
