accounting firms head into summer as they have for much of the year, with growth that is encouraging but not at the record-setting pace of 2016.

the brightest spots are year-over-year increases in tax preparation and payroll services, with cpa firm staff just behind. jobs growth in payroll services is also running slower, with hourly pay declines for both staff and employees overall. staff hours worked is down from the year-ago point, but pay rates are up.

the u.s. economy added 138,000 jobs, compared to an average monthly gain of 181,000 over the prior 12 months, and the unemployment rate slid 1/10 of a percentage point to 4.3 percent. things look a little better in professional and business services, which advanced by 38,000 in may. the sector has added an average of 46,000 jobs per month so far this year, in line with the average monthly job gain in 2016.

there were 1,002,000 people employed in the accounting profession in may, down 400 or statistically flat for the month but up 21,100 or 2.2 percent for the year. they worked an average 35.6 hours per week, up 18 minutes or 0.8 percent for the month and unchanged year over year.

their hourly earnings averaged $31.83, up 19 cents for the month and 88 cents for the year, respective increases of 0.6 and 2.8 percent.

staff numbered 763,300, up 1,500 or 0.2 percent for the month and 25,900 or 3.5 percent for the year. they worked 33.7 hours, down 12 minutes for the month and 48 minutes for the year, respective declines of 0.6 and 2.3 percent. they earned $24.79 an hour, up 11 cents or 0.4 percent for the month and 36 cents or 1.5 percent for the year.

cpa firms employed 473,400, up a scant 300 or 0.1 percent for the month and 8,500 or 1.8 percent for the year. they averaged 36.3 weekly hours, down 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month and half an hour or 1.4 percent for the year. their earnings averaged $34.09 an hour, down 29 cents or 0.8 percent for the month and 15 cents or 0.4 percent for the year.

staff at cpa firms numbered 350,400, up 1,100 or 0.3 percent for the month and 16,400 or 4.9 percent for the year. they worked 34.8 hours, down 24 minutes or 1.1 percent for the month and 1 hour or 2.8 percent for the year. their hourly earnings dipped as well, at $26.47 down 5 cents or 0.2 percent for the month, but up 30 cents or 1.1 percent for the year.

tax preparation services employed 101,000, up 1,000 or 1 percent for the month (gotta love all those round numbers) and 5,800 or 6.1 percent for the year.

payroll services had 171,000 employees on their rolls, up 3,900 or 2.3 percent for the month and 9,600 or 5.9 percent for the year. their weekly hours averaged 36.0, up 400 or 1.1 percent for the month and 300 or 0.8 percent for the year. they made $30.09 an hour, up 19 cents or 0.6 percent for the month in a 2017 that has bounced back and forth, but down $1.33 or 4.2 percent for the year.

payroll staff numbered 144,900, up 3,800 or 2.7 percent for the month and 5,400 or 3.9 percent for the year. they worked 34.7 hours per week, down 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month but up 24 minutes or 1.2 percent for the year. their hourly earnings flipped the pattern at $24.67 an hour, up 21 cents or 0.9 percent for the month but down 57 cents or 2.3 percent for the year.

other accounting services employed 255,000, up 700 or 0.3 percent for the month and 2,100 or 0.8 percent for the year.

women made up 621,800 of total profession employment, up 1,800 or 0.3 percent for the month and 16,600 or 2.7 percent for the year. at cpa firms they number 292,100, up 1,500 or 0.5 percent for the month and 10,300 or 3.7 percent for the year. in payroll they totaled 77,700, up 1,100 or 1.4 percent for the month and 300 or 0.4 percent for the year.
