the irs has received 90.3 million individual income tax returns as of march 29, the latest data available, up 0.2 percent from the same period in 2023. it has processed 88.8 million returns, down 1 percent.
e-filing receipts
electronic filings total 87.4 million, up 0.3 percent. of those, 46.3 million are being handled by tax pros, down 0.5 percent, and 41.1 million by self-preparers, up 1.1 percent.
the pros’ numbers are down – but that could be in part because of seven fewer days in the 2024 tax season, which began jan. 29, than the 2023 season, which began jan. 23. the good news is that as far as market share goes, professionals submitted 53 percent of e-filings.

visits to irs.gov are up 18.3 percent to 468 million.
refunds
refunds number 60.9 million, down 3.3 percent, in the total amount of $185.6 billion, up 1.4 percent. the average refund of $3,050 is up 4.8 percent.
direct deposit refunds number 58.1 million, down 4.5 percent, in the total amount of $181.6 billion, up 0.5 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $3,124 is up 5.3 percent.
