allen’s story began in san francisco, working for deloitte, where he unexpectedly found himself immersed in the wine industry. despite wine not being the most sought-after specialty, it allowed him to remain close to family in santa rosa, california, and sparked a passion that would define his career. what started as an unconventional choice evolved into a remarkable trajectory, culminating in the creation of the allen wine group in 2009.

allen’s firm stands apart for its deep-rooted expertise. unlike traditional cpa firms that offer a mix of services across industries, the allen wine group is laser-focused on wineries. “we’ve worked in the industry ourselves,” allen says. his dedication has paid off. over 15 years, the allen wine group has grown to 26 professionals serving 50 winery clients, handling everything from outsourced accounting to compliance, special projects, and it migrations.

allen delves into the advantages of niche marketing, highlighting how specialization creates a competitive edge. allen explains that by focusing exclusively on wineries, his firm builds stronger client relationships and provides higher-value advisory services. “for small and medium-sized wineries, it’s our race to lose,” he shares.

other highlights include:

  1. leverage industry experience: start with industries you know intimately. for allen, years as a cfo and controller in the wine business laid the foundation for his firm.
  2. focus on relationships: allen highlights the importance of networking with banks, attorneys, and other industry professionals to build a steady referral pipeline.
  3. be bold and persistent: “courage and persistence are key,” allen advises, encouraging firms to commit fully to their niche vision.
