the 2024 filing season has been seven days shorter than 2023’s, but that’s making less difference as individual income tax returns keep dropping into the internal revenue service inbox, just 3 percent off last year’s pace.

the irs had received 44.6 million such returns as of feb. 23, the last week for which data has been released. it had processed 44.1 million returns, down 3.6 percent.

e-filings

electronic filings totaled 43.7 million, down 2.9 percent. tax professionals accounted for 19.3 million, down 4.7 percent, and self-preparers submitted 24.4 million, down 1.4 percent.

tax pros are handling 44.2 percent of e-filings, edging up from the previous week’s 41.5 percent.

website visits

traffic on irs.gov keeps thrumming, with 292.2 million visits up 13.7 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 29 million, down 17.6 percent, in the total amount of $93 billion, down 14.1 percent. the average refund of $3,213 was up 4.3 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 28.4 million, down 15 percent, in the total amount of $92.8 billion, down 12.3 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $3,272 was up 3.2 percent.
