nationally, overall employment – total nonfarm payroll – increased by 216,000 the same month, pegging unemployment at 3.7 percent. professional and business services added 13,000.
accountants are putting in 36.2 hours weekly – the highest mark since october 2022 – up half an hour or 1.4 percent for the month and 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year.
the staff number, 848,700, is down 1,900 or 0.2 percent for the month but up 26,400 or 3.2 percent for the year. they are working 35.9 hours, a record high, up 42 minutes or 2 percent for the month and an hour or 2.9 percent for the year.
cpa firms
cpa firms employ 548,900, up 200 or statistically flat for the month and up 9,600 or 1.8 percent for the year. employees are working 36.7 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month but down half an hour or 1.3 percent for the year.
staff at cpa firms number 378,100, down 2,200 or 0.6 percent for the month but up 3,300 or 0.9 percent for the year. they are working 35.5 hours, up 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the month but down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year.
tax preparation services
tax preparation services at 88,900 are down 3,500 or 3.8 percent for the month and 4,800 or 5.1 percent for the year.
payroll services
payroll services employ 224,500, up 1,100 or 0.5 percent for the month and 5,700 or 2.6 percent for the year. they average 36.1 hours – tying a mark last seen in october 2022 – up 1 hour 18 minutes or 3.7 percent for the month and 2 hours 54 minutes or 8.7 percent for the year.
payroll services staff have hit a record 194,900, up 1,300 or 0.7 percent for the month and 14,700 or 8.2 percent for the year. they are working 35.4 hours, up 54 minutes or 2.6 percent for the month and 4 hours 24 minutes or 14.2 percent for the year. (seriously, it’s not a typo but an aberration. from september 2022 to january 2023, weekly hours roller coastered from 36.4 to 31 to 33.3.)
bookkeeping
other accounting services employ 291,900, down 1,200 or 0.4 percent for the month but up 6,600 or 2.3 percent for the year.
women
women number 737,800 overall, topping the previous month’s record by 400 and 0.1 percent, and up 23,900 and 3.3 percent for the year. at cpa firms they total 332,200, down 900 or 0.3 percent for the month but up 9,100 or 2.8 percent for the year. women in payroll number 105,300, up 1,700 or 1.6 percent for the month but down 200 or 0.2 percent for the year.

this is interesting. there is definitely a rise of offshore workers going on due to the inability to find local talent.
