while stress can manifest itself in a variety of ways, there are a few that are most common.
“stress that’s left unchecked can contribute to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes,” according to mayoclinic.org.
well, app lovers rejoice because tech is available that’s designed to help you pay attention to your most valuable asset: you.
the meditation tool calm created a simple page called breathe that guides you through a few calming deep breaths. if you want to customize your breathing exercises, try xhalr.com.
while better sleep is always more helpful in mitigating stress, studies have found that few apps that claim to help you monitor your sleep are tested scientifically. and the ones that have been tested show a weak correlation to standard sleep tests.
instead of a sleep app, try meditation podcasts and services, including the ones mentioned above, as well as 10 percent happier, headspace and insight timer to help you disconnect from the world and get better sleep.
membership in 10 percent happier is $8.33 a month, billed annually at $99.99, and it does offer a free 7-day trial. the site states it “puts more emphasis on picking top teachers than any other meditation app.”
headspace is a subsidiary of headspace health specializing in meditation. they state, “headspace can helpif you’re experiencing changes in thoughts, feelings or behaviors or just not feeling yourself. headspace can also help if you are feeling down, stressed or worried a lot of the time.” membership is either $12.99 a month billed monthly or $69.99 a year and offers podcasts, articles, “sleepcasts” and more.
if membership in meditation isn’t your thing just yet, consider insight timer, the top free meditation app on ios and android. the app is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 on choosingtherapy.com. “insight timer is a mediation app that features an extensive free meditation library. the easy-to-navigate app is good for beginners and great for advanced students of meditation,” the site says of the app.
