tax season 2023 has been consistent. refunds are down, and so are self-prepared filings and irs.gov visits. by every other marker, though, business is as usual or better.

as of feb. 24, the latest data available, the irs had received 46 million individual income tax returns, up 1.3 percent from the same period in 2022. it had processed 45.7 million returns, up 4.3 percent.

we always like to see processing go quickly, and the agency is speeding through returns right now at a clip of 99.4 percent.

e-filings

electronic filings totaled 45 million, up 1.5 percent. of all returns, 97.8 are filed electronically.

tax professionals handled 20.2 million e-filings, up 6.1 percent. self-preparers submitted 24.7 million, down 1.9 percent.

the pros had 45 percent of e-filings.

website visits

we know you can’t get the irs on the phone, but that doesn’t mean people are turning to the website for answers. visits to irs.gov at 256.9 million were down 16.5 percent.

refunds

refunds totaled 35.1 million, up 18.2 percent, in total $108.2 billion, up 4.8 percent. the average refund of $3,079 was down 11.3 percent.

direct deposit refunds totaled 33.4 million, up 14.3 percent, in total $105.8 billion, up 2.7 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $3,170 was down 10.2 percent.

    how many of those you classify as”tax professionals” are credentialed – they have the cpa, ea, or jd designation? the vast majority of those with a ptin have none of them.
