the second week of tax season brought more double-digit increases over 2022’s pace for the same period.

according to the latest data, the internal revenue service has received 28.8 million individual income tax returns, up 9.1 percent. it has processed 26.6 million returns, up 13.6 percent.

the agency has processed a respectable 92.4 percent of returns.

e-filings

electronic filings total 27.2 million, up 6.3 percent. online definitely dominates, with 94.5 percent of all filings.

tax professionals submitted 10.7 million returns, up 11.1 percent, while self-preparers turned in 16.6 million, up 3.4 percent.

the pros currently hold 39.2 percent of the market.

website visits

visits to irs.gov at 149.7 million were down 13.4 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 13.3 million, up 48.4 percent, in the total amount of $26.7 billion, up 27.6 percent. however, the average refund of $1,997 was down 14 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 12.2 million, up 34.8 percent, in the total amount of $25.4 billion, up 17.1 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $2,084 was down 13.2 percent.

direct deposit was favored by 91.3 percent of refund recipients, who received average refunds 4.4 percent higher than those who preferred paper checks.
