although there are plenty of apps and resources where you can go to study a new language, it’s easy to forget to make the effort to open them.

fortunately, there are several apps that can help you learn without having to sit through tutorials or go to class. where was all this in college?
the toucan extension hangs out with you while you surf the web and randomly translates words on the page to the language you want to learn. well, the process is not quite random because toucan knows your language level and chooses words and phrases that help you level up without having to make a conscious effort to start a lesson. it’s free for the basic level or about five bucks a month for more language training and games. and the little toucan mascot is adorable.
there’s also drops, which allows you to learn a different language in bite-sized pieces with games and mnemonics. an annual subscription is $69.99 per year. however, a lifetime subscription for one is $159.99 and a lifetime subscription for two is $319.98. although, when i last checked, each of the lifetime subscriptions were on sale for $79.99 and $87.99, respectively.
the duoling app is the o.g. free language learning tool. you can upgrade to duolingo plus for $6.99 each month, which eliminates popup ads and includes several unlimited features. however, most reviewers agree that the free version of the app is more than suitable for most.
memrise is an award-winning language-learning tool that focuses on real-world interactions. it currently has 23 languages and utilizes video examples of real-language interactions. while memrise is free, there are, of course, paid subscriptions with premium features for $8.99 a month, or less if you pay for an annual subscription upfront. there is also a lifetime subscription for $119.99.
