the accounting firm operations and technology survey
no matter how large tablets get, sometimes there’s nothing else like a desktop for displaying columns and columns of data. when that time comes, 49 percent of accounting firm operations and technology survey users turned to dell. hp was second at 16.8 percent, where it has remained solidly for three years now.

the #1 and #2 spots were the same across the board for all firm sizes. for solos and small firms, #3 went to custom builds, which had 6.4 percent of medium firms and no foothold at all in firms of 51 or more employees. apple and asus show up 4.8 percent or less and only in firms of 10 or fewer employees, and no one is using acer anymore.

i’m partial to lenovo. i’m surprised larger firms gravitate to dell.
could be that they get better deals for large purchases.
i am the firm’s cto, but i’m not the it manager, even though i sometimes get stuck with resolving petty issues. the last thing i want is hardware issues, and it’s enough to deal with the infrastructure and tech stack. i haven’t had a good experience with dell in the past five or more years. we had an it manager who gravitated to dell, and we bought a bunch.
three out of five failed shortly after warranty expiration (not blaming him, he’s a great guy and very competent). i’m not looking for good warranty support as much as durability and not needing repair, and i find lenovo fits that bill more often than dell.
while i am an outlier in the firm, my office desktop is hp, very high-end custom configured and has served me well for over four years, but it’s the only hp we have, so i can’t give a fully informed opinion on hp. the hp may be better just because we chose the highest quality components.
the test of the quality of a desktop or laptop is whether it is good enough in standard configuration off the shelf, customization changes the outcome and reduces comparability. in the end, with cloud servers, the local hardware hardly matters. basically, the computer must turn on, be ergonomically efficient, and connect to the internet.
so all i really care about is that it keeps working and users are happy. performance is secondary and almost does not matter as it used to with lans.

my last computer purchase was dell desktop. whole buying experience was awful. computer was bad, argued with dell for weeks before they would replace it and got a refurbished computer to replace a new one. they said i was past the 30 day replacement period, even though i had been arguing with them during the 30 day window. next computer purchase will not be dell.
