the internal revenue service had received 139.9 million individual income tax returns as of the week ending june 26 – the latest data available – down 3.5 percent from the same period in 2019. it had processed 128.5 million returns, down 10.6 percent.

data charte-filings

electronic filings totaled 127.3 million, down 2.3 percent. as with total returns, the irs noted the figure included income tax returns filed to obtain economic impact payments by those who ordinarily would not file returns.

tax professionals handled 65.3 million e-filings, down 11.5 percent. self-preparers filed 62 million, up 9.6 percent. the pros had 51.3 percent of e-filings, up slightly from previous weeks.

website visits

visits to irs.gov totaled 1.3 billion, up 160.4 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 94.1 million, down 10.3 percent, in the total amount of $259.7 billion, down 9.6 percent. the average refund of $2,759 was up 0.8 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 78.3 million, down 12.2 percent, in the total amount of $227 billion, down 11.7 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $2,899 was up 0.6 percent.
