tax pros may be down for the year in e-filings, but they remain ahead of the do-it-yourselfers.

the irs had received 138.3 million individual income tax returns as of the week ending june 19, the latest data available. that’s down 4.4 percent from the same period in 2019. the agency had processed 126.6 million returns, down 11.4 percent.

e-filings

electronic filings totaled 125.6 million, down 3.4 percent. of those, 64.2 million were handled by tax professionals, down 12.7 percent, and 61.5 million by self-preparers, up 8.7 percent.

pros gained a little ground with 51.1 percent of e-filings.

website visits

visits to irs.gov at 1.3 billion were up 160.1 percent.

refunds

total refunds numbered 93.2 million, down 10.8 percent, in the total amount of $257.6 billion, down 9.9 percent. the average refund of $2,763 was up 1 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 77.6 million, down 12.8 percent, in the total amount of $225.2 billion, down 12.1 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $2,903 was up 0.8 percent.
