the bounce rate is the percentage of single-page sessions that occur when visitors come to your site. in other words, a person visits a page and then exits the site, without visiting other pages.
in google analytics you can tell each page’s bounce rate by day, week, month or year. for the most important pages on your site, such as landing pages, form pages and content-related pages, consider the bounce rate carefully.
if your web pages are slow to load, that may be an indicator for the bounce; but, more importantly, google will take notice and downgrade your search ranking because of poor performance.
how do you remedy a slow-loading page?
first, you need to determine the site’s or page’s overall load time. you can do that using one of many site speed tools, such as:
- pingdom
- google pagespeed insights
- webpage test
- gtmetrix
- dareboost
- web page analyzer
- load impact
- site relic
each of those tools will score your site (or page) from 0 to 100. if the return rate is higher than 80, you’re in good shape. if not, consider:
- optimizing images throughout the site (for wordpress consider an image optimizer so you don’t have to change each image and reload and link it)
- removing interstitial content – content that pops up and blocks part of a page (or most of a page on a mobile device)
- removing outdated media, such as flash
- updating plugins and themes on wordpress sites
- fixing any broken links
- removing duplicate content
