the irs had received 85.7 million individual income tax returns by the week ending march 23, the latest data available. that’s up 0.5 percent from the same period last year.

it had processed 83.3 million of those returns, up 0.4 percent.

the irs is picking up the processing pace a bit, now at 97.2 percent.

e-filed returns totaled 79.8 million, up 0.8 percent.

tax professionals prepared 43.1 million e-filings, down 0.7 percent, and self-preparers handled 36.7 million, 2.7 percent.

tax pros picked up points as well, handling 54.1 percent of e-filings.

visits to irs.gov remained well above last year, 24.7 percent, at 307.1 million.

the total number of refunds issued was 67.6 million, down 1.1 percent. the total amount of $197.7 billion was down slightly as well, 0.1 percent, but the average refund of $2,925 was up 1 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 59.3 million, down 1.5 percent, and the total amount of $181.6 billion was down 0.9 percent. the average direct deposit refund of $3,062 was up 0.6 percent.

direct deposit refunds were favored by 87.7 percent of taxpayers.
