the nationwide overall employment picture includes an unchanged november unemployment rate of 4.1 percent, with 228,000 new jobs. professional and business services continued an upward trend with 46,000 new positions for the month and 548,000 over the past year.

tax & accounting employment continues to climb, hitting 1,012,500, a gain of 4,000 or 0.4 percent for the month and 12,200 or 1.2 percent for the year.

weekly hours are averaging 35.5, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month, and flat for the year. hourly earnings took a slight uptick to $32.13, up 11 cents or 0.3 percent for the month and $1.05 or 3.4 percent for the year.

staff number 768,100, up 400 or 0.1 percent for the month and 4,500 or 0.6 percent for the year. their weekly hours have been within the same half-hour range all year and currently top out at 34.4, up 6 minutes and 0.3 percent for the month and year. their earnings are just 2 cents short of the year’s august high mark at $25.32, up 6 cents or 0.2 percent for the month and $1.16 or 4.8 percent for the year.

cpa firms

cpa firms employ 478,500, down 200 or statistically flat for the month but up 7,900 or 1.7 percent for the year. they work an average 36.5 hours, up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month but down 6 minutes or 0.3 percent year over year. they earn $34.79 an hour, up 4 cents for the month and 67 cents for the year, respective increases of 0.1 and 2 percent.

staff at cpa firms number 351,400, down 3,500 or 1 percent for the month but up 9,000 or 2.6 percent for the year. their hours match last month’s high for the year at 35.7, up half an hour or 1.4 percent over 2016. hourly earnings took a small slide for the second consecutive month to $26.67, down 4 cents or 0.1 percent for the month, but up 77 cents or 3 percent for the year.

tax prep

tax preparation services now employ 105,600, down 1,400 for the month and 6,700 for the year, respective dips of 1.3 and 6 percent.

payroll

payroll services employ 170,600, flat for the month and down 1,700 or 1 percent for the year. hours average 35.3, down 300 or 0.8 percent for the month and 1,300 or 3.6 percent for the year. earnings at $29.40 are up 3 cents or 0.1 percent for the month but down 92 cents or 3 percent for the year.

staff at payroll services number 143,300, down 700 for the month and 1,500 for the year, respective declines of 0.5 and 1 percent. their hours at 35.5 are up 6 minutes or 0.3 percent for the month but down 12 minutes or 0.6 percent for the year. at $25.38, their earnings are up 45 cents or 1.8 percent for the month and 85 cents and 3.5 percent for the year.

bookkeeping

other accounting services have 253,300 employees, up 200 or 0.1 percent for the month but down 400 or 0.2 percent for the year.

women

women in the profession number 632,100, up 3,000 or 0.5 percent for the month and 5,800 or 0.9 percent for the year. at cpa firms they number 292,600, down 1,700 or 0.6 percent for the month but up 4,100 or 1.4 percent for the year. payroll services employ 78,900 women, up 1,400 and 1.8 percent for the month but down 2,200 or 2.7 percent for the year.
