with only days left to go in the 2017 tax season, the internal revenue service still was seeing most statistics land below 2016 levels.

according to data from the week ending april 14, the latest available, the only figures on the positive side remained total refunds and average refund per taxpayer.

the irs had received 118.5 million returns, down 4.9 percent. it had processed 115 million of them, down 4.1 percent. the processing rate stood at 97.1 percent.

e-filings totaled 108.6 million, down 4.3 percent. tax professionals handled 63.4 million, down 4.5 percent, and self-preparers e-filed 45.2 million, down 3.9 percent.

tax pros gained more ground in e-filings, processing 58.4 percent of them.

visits to irs.gov at 294 million were down 5 percent.

total refunds numbered 87.5 million, down 1.5 percent. the total amount, $246.4 billion, was up 0.6 percent, while the average refund of $2,815 was up 2.1 percent.

direct deposit refunds numbered 74.6 million, down 0.8 percent. the total amount, $222.3 billion, was up 1 percent, while the average direct deposit refund of $2,978 was up 1.8 percent.
