as tax season enters its final weeks, refunds remain the only positive figure on the chart.

the internal revenue service had received 93.7 million individual income tax returns as of march 31, the latest data available, down 4.1 percent from the same period in 2016. it had processed 91.3 million of those returns, down 3.9 percent.

the agency has processed 97.4 percent of returns received in 2017.

e-filing receipts total 86.6 million, down 3.8 percent. tax professionals prepared 48.7 million of those, down 4.6 percent, with self-preparers filing 38 million, down 2.6 percent.

pros handle more e-filings, 56.2 percent of them.

visits to irs.gov at 261.1 million are down 5 percent.

total refunds number 74.2 million, down 2.4 percent. the total amount is $213.6 billion, down 0.8 percent, with an average refund of $2,878, up 1.6 percent.

total direct deposit refunds number 64.7 million, down 1.7 percent. their total amount is $196.1 billion, down 0.3 percent, with an average refund of $3,031, up 1.4 percent.

direct deposit accounts for 87.2 percent of refunds, with the average amount running 5.3 percent higher than the overall average.
