most 1040 data remains on a downturn from 2016, with only refund amounts edging barely into positive territory.

the irs had received 77.5 million individual income tax returns as of march 17, down 5.5 percent from the same time last year. as it has all season, the agency noted there have been four fewer processing days this year.

returns processed number 75.2 million, down 5.6 percent. that puts the current processing rate at 97.1 percent.

e-filed returns total 72.2 million, down 5.3 percent. of those, 38.6 million were filed by tax professionals, down 7.2 percent, and 33.7 million were self-prepared, down 2.9 percent.

tax pros account for 53.4 percent of e-filings.

visits to irs.gov, at 231.4 million, are down 6.4 percent.

the number of refunds issued is 62.5 million, down 4.5 percent. the total amount, $183.2 billion, is down 3.5 percent, but the average refund of $2,931 is up 1 percent.

the number of direct deposit refunds issued is 55.6 million, down 3.8 percent. the total amount, $170.7 billion, is down 2.9 percent, but the average refund of $3,070 is up 0.8 percent.
